Discussion groups
Several groups meet each week with slightly differing approaches. Topics vary, but might typically include:
- self realisation
- ideas for daily living
- inner rest and freedom
- meditation
- our inner nature
- self knowledge.
All groups encourage discussion and questions.
The principle underpinning all the groups is that personal discovery comes through each individual putting into practice, to the best of their ability, whatever principle the individual recognises as valuable. No one can do this work for us, we start from where we are. We may then come to experience the potential available to us as human beings.
Discussion and practice reflects a “non-dualistic” approach – that the energy or life force underlying the different people and things we see around us is a unifying conscious reality.
This approach draws on the guidance of the London Study Society’s principal teacher, the late Dr Francis Roles. He was instrumental in making available knowledge of self-realisation and methods of practice learnt over many years from H.H. Shantanand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of North India, and also the insights of Rumi and others – plus present-day thinkers and scientists who acknowledge a unity underlying everything.
There are also weekends and full residential weeks held at “Strathean”, the society’s country retreat at Te Horo. These periods allow more time to consider themes of interest, meditation together and the enjoyment of the company of others with similar interests.
